Hudson Crossing - A Bi-County Educational Park project, is centered around the Hudson River and Champlain Canal Lock 5 Island in the Towns of Saratoga and Northumberland. Just one mile north of the Village of Schuylerville, the Park may now be reached by water, on foot via the Old Champlain Canal Towpath, or by auto or bicycle via N.Y.S. Route 4. Long-range plans will also allow pedestrian, bicycle, and snowmobile access over the Dix Bridge from the Towns of Greenwich and Easton in Washington County.
Designed to bring people together, bridge communities, foster environmental stewardship, and connect educational resources, Hudson Crossing Park is becoming a crossroads destination on the Lakes to Locks Passage.
Work in the Park has begun to highlight the unique history, geology, and economic and cultural significance of the upper Hudson River and Champlain Canal. The Park provides new opportunities for recreation and relaxation through a series of trails, play space and boat access. Clear interpretive signs, multi-generational elements, and handicap accessibility are considered high priorities in the Park development.
When complete, the project will be a heritage necklace of historic sites, markers, monuments, and trails. Focal points include Stark's Knob Scientific Reservation, the Knox Trail Pocket Park, the Champlain Canal Lock 5 Island, the Dix Bridge, and pedestrian and water trails in Washington County. The centerpiece of Hudson Crossing will be the proposed Environmental Education Center and Great Hall to be sited next to the historic Dix Bridge.
Hudson Crossing initiated a successful inter-municipal local waterfront revitalization effort. Partnering with the N.Y.S. Canal Corporation, the N.Y.S. Museum, the N.Y.S. Department of Transportation, the Towns of Northumberland, and Saratoga, and the Village of Schuylerville, Hudson Crossing Park is a collaborative grassroots effort. It will encourage educational tourism and improve the quality of life for community residents.
To-date, the Park has received over $568,000.00 through federal, state, and county appropriations and grants as well as through private donations and foundation grants. Hudson Crossing Park, Inc. is a 501(c)(3) non-profit corporation. The Board of Directors meets from 3:30 - 5:00 on the last Wednesday of each month (except December) at the Town of Saratoga municipal building in Schuylerville . The public is always welcome.
Construction of the Hudson Crossing Play Garden, picnic pavilion, trails and boat dockage on the Champlain Canal Lock 5 Island and improved parking and a scenic overlook on Stark's Knob are among the current construction plans.
