Lakes to Locks Passage

Lakes to Locks Passage, "The Great Northeast Journey", offers a unique American byway experience. By bike, foot, boat or car, Lakes to Locks Passage provides access to 234 miles of diverse historic and recreational sites along the waterway that has been used by migratory birds, explorers, armies, commercial enterprises, and now, by Byway enthusiasts. This byway which stretches from the Village of Waterford to the Canadian border has recently been designated as an All-American Road, only one of twenty such designations bestowed nationally by the Federal Highway Administration.

The Champlain Canal portion of the byway is an easy 64 mile stretch from Waterford to Whitehall along U. S. Route 4 and the Champlain Canal/Hudson River. By boat, bike or by car, you can easily enjoy at least two days exploring this section of the byway.

Key attractions along the byway include Peebles Island, the Flight of Locks (Waterford), the Waterford Museum and the Waterford Harbor Visitors Center; the Saratoga National Historical Park and the Stillwater Blockhouse Visitors Center in Stillwater; the Saratoga National Cemetery; the Schuyler House, the Saratoga Battle Monument, Schuyler's Canal Park Visitors Center in the Villages of Schuylerville; Hudson Crossing Park, Roger's Island Visitors Center, the Old Fort House Museum in Fort Edward; the Glens Falls Feeder Canal; and the Skenesborough Museum Heritage Visitors Center and Skene Manor in Whitehall. Each of the visitors centers can provide one with unique walking tours and information about other interesting things to do in their community. The Champlain Canal and its wonderful "locking" along the Upper Hudson River is an attraction unto itself. Marinas can be found the entire length of the Canal and Canal boat tours are offered in Waterford, Mechanicville, and Schuylerville.

In Whitehall, byway travelers can continue north on NYS Routes 22 and 9N to the junction of NYS Route 9B to Au Roche State Park, Rouses Point and northward to the Canadian border. The total length of the Lakes to Locks Passage from Waterford to the Canadian border is 234 miles.

Lakes to Locks Passage takes you through a spectacular landscape laden with history. Find your way through four story-filled regions that connect New York's historic waters of Lake Champlain and Lake George with the Champlain Canal and Hudson River to the south and the Chambly Canal to the Richelieu and St. Lawrence Rivers of Quebec to the north.
