Hudson River Snapshot Day 2010
Act Locally on Thursday, October 14

Snapshot Day students at Hudson River

On Thursday, October 14, environmental education center groups and school classes all along the Hudson River will collect scientific information and share it to create a picture of "A Day in the Life of the Hudson River", sponsored by the NYS DEC Hudson River Estuary Program. This 8th Annual "Snapshot Day" program helps participants understand how their piece of the river fits into the larger Hudson River and estuary ecosystem.

Hudson Crossing Park will be the northernmost site for sampling, and we NEED YOUR HELP! Students and educators are invited to join Nancy Robertson, Community Educator from Cornell Cooperative Extension, to use hands-on field techniques to describe the River on Thursday morning. Participants will have the chance to seine for fish, collect water and invertebrate samples, and examine water chemistry parameters.

How to sign up:  Contact Nancy Robertson by email at nlr24@cornell.edu  or at 518-885-8995 to register as an individual or as a group.

The Hoopla Introduces New Friends to HCP
Labyrinth Delights

Mike Bielkiewicz, Hudson Crossing Board Member, is shown above at the information table set up at "The Hoopla" festival in Saratoga Spa State Park on Saturday, October 2.

This well-attended new family event provided an opportunity to introduce the Park to many in the Saratoga community, and the temporary labyrinth installed there by Hudson Crossing volunteers was enjoyed by festival goers of all ages. Notice the many brochures, videos, and posters on the information table- we are so grateful for this array of materials that help us tell the story of the Park! Thanks to Mike B. for his endless hours spent creating them, and to NYS Canal Corporation for underwriting reproduction costs.

Photogenic Park
Hudson Crossing Images Adorn Calendars

Winning photo by Jim McKnight

Many of you have discovered that the Park is a great place to capture wonderful photos, both of people and of nature.  The Schuylerville Schools Calendar for the 2010-2011 school year (located for download as a large pdf at www.schuylervilleschools.org) features images from Hudson Crossing on the September page, while the 2011 Erie Canalway National Heritage Corridor Calendar ( www.eriecanalway.org ) includes an excellent shot of the "Lilac Ladies" at the Cardboard Boat Race.

Have you captured an amazing shot at the Park? Send it our way, and we may feature it in an upcoming newsletter. To submit, simply email it as an attached jpg to info@hudsoncrossingpark.org with "photo submission" in the subject line.
